The History of Mohegan Sun Pocono
Mohegan Sun Pocono was the first gaming destination that Mohegan Sun’s parent company, Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE), known as Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority in 2006, launched outside of Connecticut. By this time, MGE’s flagship property in Connecticut, Mohegan Sun, was a massive success story, becoming one of the highest grossing casino and entertainment destinations in the world. With that success, the Mohegan Tribe and MGE looked to expansion.
The very first venture in that plan, of which now has evolved to seven owned or operated properties across the globe, was Mohegan Sun Pocono (MSP). Opened in November of 2006, MSP immediately became one of the premier casino destinations in Pennsylvania and played a major role in the further expansion of a burgeoning gaming and entertainment enterprise in MGE. The pathway for expanded gaming in Pennsylvania came about after legislation in 2004 allowed a select number of casinos to offer slot-based gaming. MGE saw northeast Pennsylvania as the perfect opportunity to expand their brand and expertise into a nearby region that had easy access to New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware. Mohegan leadership also anticipated further gaming expansion in the great State of Pennsylvania, which came to fruition in 2006, when MSP became the very first destination in Pennsylvania to launch table games. Within ten years of that launch, Mohegan Sun Pocono had net revenues of roughly $300 million.
Today, MSP, which is located on 400 acres in the hillside of Plains, Pennsylvania, is home to more than 1,700 slot machines, more than 60 live table games including a Poker Room, live harness throughout most of the year, fine dining, various retail options, a world-class spa, live entertainment in Breakers, Bar Louie and the Keystone Grand Ballroom, and the 230+ Hotel at Mohegan Sun Pocono which marked a major event in MSP’s history when it opened on November 14, 2013.
Another key milestone came in October of 2019 when the Unibet Sportsbook at Mohegan Sun Pocono held its Grand Opening. Penn State football legend, LaVar Arrington, assisted in christening the new venue that featured live betting options, various kiosks, helpful teller booths, food & beverage options and a 28-foot wide high-def video wall where roughly 40 guests can take in all the major sports action. A longstanding partnership with the United Way of Wyoming Valley has produced regular giveaways and food bank initiatives and just recently, MSP served as a Covid-19 test-site for the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre PA region. In 2016, MSP also updated to a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system that reduced energy consumption by 22% and limited its carbon footprint by 3,900 metric tons. Pennsylvania-based UGI HVAC Enterprises, Inc. (UGI HVAC) installed the new system, and as part of this project, MSP and HVAC also worked with Penn State Hazelton engineering students as part of their Senior Design Capstone project, which focused on alternative energy and power generation.
Since its inception, Mohegan Sun Pocono has also contributed more than $1.6 billion in slot and table game tax revenue to the Commonwealth through August 2021.

WILKES-BARRE, PA (June 15, 2020) – News that Luzerne County, PA will be entering the green phase was recently made and with that, Mohegan Sun Pocono (MSP) is excited to announce a public reopening at 10:00am on Monday, June 22nd. This reopening will include comprehensive safety and social distancing protocols, some of which include thermal temperature scans at all points of entry, protective mask requirements and limited guest capacity.
“Over the past few months Mohegan Sun Pocono has been laser-focused on preparing our property for a safe reopen and we’re really excited to welcome back both our valued guests and more of our incredible team members on June 22nd.” said Anthony Carlucci, President & General Manager of MSP. “With the guidance of industry experts, regulatory agencies, and in closely mirroring the comprehensive protocols put in place by Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment’s (MGE) flagship property in Connecticut, we feel we are well-prepared for our doors to open and can’t wait to welcome guests to a clean, safe and fun environment.”
Mohegan Sun Pocono temporarily closed all casino and resort operations on the evening of Monday, March 16th, due to necessary precautions related to COVID-19. In the past few months, comprehensive safety protocols and technology have been implemented across MSP for the safety of all guests, team members and the surrounding community. All of these new safety features can be found at Mohegansunpocono.com as well, though key measures and information include:
- Non-invasive thermal cameras for both team member and guest entrances. (Any guest or team member that registers a temperature of 100.2 or higher will be rechecked, and if the reading is still high, they will be asked politely to return when they feel healthy and contact their healthcare provider)
- Protective face masks will be required for all team members and guests
- Various slot machines will be turned off and table game seating will be reduced to implement and promote social distancing
- Significant increases in hand sanitizer dispensers and disinfecting wipes will be present across all sections of MSP
- Highly frequent cleaning and disinfecting throughout all of Mohegan Sun Pocono will occur, including but not limited to all gaming positions, public seating areas and restrooms
- All restaurants and bars will have reduced seating to allow for physical distancing and VIP Lounges will have full service stations only
- Additional safety signage and floor decals have been installed throughout the property to promote and reinforce social distancing
- Plexiglass dividers at transactional locations have been installed
- All Mohegan Sun Pocono team members will take part in a COVID-19 training program upon returning for work
*For Mohegan Sun Pocono’s initial reopening, there will only be two guest entries: the main valet entrance and hotel valet entrance. The racing entrance will open in the near future.
Areas of Mohegan Sun Pocono that will remain closed for the initial reopening will include Valet Parking, Seasons Buffet, the Poker Room, pools and gyms.
The Hotel at Mohegan Sun Pocono will resume operations on Sunday, June 28th and will begin accepting reservations on Monday, June 22nd.

WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 16, 2020) – Mohegan Sun Pocono will temporarily close all casino, and resort operations, effective at 8:00pm on Monday, March 16th. These actions come amid the necessary precautions due to COVID-19 and in close consultation with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) as well as local and state health authorities.
“In response to the rapidly developing situation surrounding coronavirus (COVID-19) and our efforts to protect the health and safety of our valued guests and team members, Mohegan Sun Pocono is acting to comply with the direction of Governor Wolf’s office to promote social distancing and limit/prohibit mass gatherings and will temporarily close its doors beginning at 8:00pm on Monday, March 16, 2020”, said Anthony Carlucci, President & General Manager of Mohegan Sun Pocono. “All activities are cancelled, including live racing, casino promotions and events.”
“The wellness of our guests and team members is our top priority. While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at the property, Mohegan Sun Pocono is temporarily closing at the direction of the Governor’s office in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among large groups in the state of Pennsylvania. The new 1,130-square-foot Unibet Sportsbook at Mohegan Sun Pocono will be open daily from 11 a.m. to Midnight, allowing fans to place their bets on their favorite teams and sporting events. The Unibet Sportsbook – located across from Molly O’Shea’s Irish Pub & Eatery (which will serve food in the lounge) and near the main entrance at Mohegan Sun Pocono – features a 28 foot-wide, high-definition video wall with three additional displays near the sportsbook tables for additional viewing, which is fully customizable allowing it to be transformed into two giant television screens or modified to accommodate up to 16 sporting events at once.
