From ambulances and bridge improvements to park enhancements, educational investments and public safety projects, more than $11.3 million in recently approved Local Share Account (LSA) funding generated through Mohegan Pennsylvania will support communities throughout Luzerne County. The latest funding builds on a broader impact that has included more than $159 million in property tax relief for homeowners across Luzerne County school districts since 2016.
LSA funding is a Pennsylvania program that distributes gaming tax revenues to directly support local community and public safety initiatives as well as economic development projects.
This recently approved LSA funding for Luzerne County generated through Mohegan Pennsylvania’s gaming operations this year will support police and fire department improvements, roadway upgrades, downtown revitalization efforts, and key updates to Wilkes University and King’s College. The funding represents a continued investment in vital community initiatives, and Mohegan Pennsylvania is proud to support the projects and services that help strengthen communities throughout the County.
“Mohegan Pennsylvania has always taken great pride in being a major employer, entertainment destination and community partner in Luzerne County and across Pennsylvania,” said Tony Carlucci, President & General Manager of Mohegan Pennsylvania. “Since opening our doors, and most impactfully of recent – revenue generated by our property has helped support various community-driven and public safety focused investments throughout the region, and that’s a source of tremendous pride for our entire team.”
Emergency Services Funding
The recently approved LSA funding will support critical emergency services initiatives throughout Luzerne County, including new ambulances for the City of Wilkes-Barre and Hughestown Borough. Interior and exterior fire station repairs will also be completed for the City of Hazleton, while key equipment and vehicle upgrades will be provided to police departments in Salem Township, Pittston Township, Jackson Township and Jenkins Township. The Wilkes-Barre Police Department will also receive public safety and communications improvements, including enhancements to its digital messaging infrastructure.
Parks, Recreation and Education
LSA funding will also support a variety of parks, recreation and educational initiatives. Luzerne Country projects include the Pittston City Open Space Build Out Project, Market & Main Promenade Park Improvements in Pittston, the Hazle Township Park Loop & Accessibility Project, restoration work at Charney Park and Slapar Park in West Wyoming Borough, and rehabilitation of the Woodside Playground in Foster Township. Educational and community facility investments will also be made at Wilkes University, King’s College and Camp Kresge, helping to enhance learning environments, campus safety and community programming opportunities throughout the region.
Infrastructure
Much needed infrastructure projects are also planned and include a replacement for the North Market Street Bridge in Nanticoke City, stormwater drainage improvements at Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza, downtown public square pathway improvements in Wilkes-Barre, Ashley Main Street streetscape improvements, Northhampton street pavement and other infrastructure improvements, Penn Plaza Streetscape and redevelopment improvements, Hunlock Township street improvements, road paving and transportation projects in various municipalities and additional bridge, drainage and stormwater management projects throughout Luzerne County.
“It has been my pleasure to work alongside the leaders, staff, and community members at Mohegan Pennsylvania for more than 20 years.” Said Eddie Day Pashinski, Representative for the 121st District of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. “Harness horse racing and gaming at Mohegan Pennsylvania have generated millions of dollars in tax revenues and Local Share Account (LSA) contributions that have supported communities throughout Luzerne County. Through the LSA, millions of dollars have been invested in important community needs, including emergency services, education, infrastructure, and other projects that strengthen our communities. These investments help municipalities address needed repairs, improvements, and essential services without requiring them to bear the full cost through additional local taxes.
I am proud of the role Mohegan Pennsylvania has played in supporting our communities and grateful for the partnerships that have helped make these investments possible over the years.”
In addition to supporting community projects, revenue generated by Mohegan Pennsylvania has contributed more than $159 million in property tax relief for homeowners across Luzerne County’s 11 school districts since 2016. Averaging more than $14 million annually, these funds help reduce the school property tax burden for local residents while providing lasting benefits to communities throughout the region.
